Why do Ethereum gas fees change?

Gas fees rise and fall with demand for block space. When many people transact at once, the base fee increases under EIP-1559; when activity is quiet, fees fall.

How Ethereum gas works

Every Ethereum transaction consumes gas, a unit measuring computational effort. Since EIP-1559, each block has a base fee that is burned and adjusts automatically with demand, plus an optional priority fee (tip) that goes to validators to speed up inclusion. Fees spike during popular mints, market volatility, and network congestion, and fall when activity is quiet.
